What Is TMJ?

TMJ is a medical condition that occurs when the temporomandibular joints, the joints between the upper and lower jaw, are damaged. TMJ disorder can refer to any problem that prevents the muscles, ligaments, bones and discs from working properly, but typically TMJ disorder occurs when the discs that cushion the two bones in this joint are damaged. If you are struggling with this condition, Main Street Wellness & Chiropractic can help.

 Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder causes both obvious symptoms and symptoms that are less apparent. Obvious symptoms include pain and discomfort of the jaw, an inability to open the jaw completely, also known as “lock jaw.”

In addition, this disorder can cause pain in many areas of the face and neck. Pain behind the eyes, bloodshot eyes and eyes that are sensitive to sunlight can be a symptom. Some patients experience headaches, ear buzzing, ear pain or vertigo. Fatigue, sore muscles, poor mobility and even difficulties with swallowing can all be linked to TMJ. Our chiropractors can help with all of these.
